What’s the difference between an emergency hospital and my veterinarian’s office?

An emergency hospital is equipped to care for pets experiencing urgent or life-threatening conditions. No appointment is ever needed in an emergency, and we are open 24-hours a day including holidays to be there when your primary care veterinarian may be unavailable.

When your veterinarian’s office is closed—or unable to see your pet right away—our emergency care team is ready to help. We treat a wide range of conditions, including seizures, traumatic injuries, snake bites, poisoning, animal attacks, and other medical emergencies requiring immediate attention.

We know it’s not always clear whether you should take your pet to the emergency room. You can check this list of common signs and symptoms your pet needs emergency care, and give us a call directly at (386) 252-0337. We can help you figure out if it’s truly an emergency and plan your next steps.

Just like in a human emergency room, pets are seen based on the urgency of their condition. This means patients with the most critical or life-threatening needs are treated first, which may result in longer wait times for less urgent cases.

Whenever possible, we recommend calling ahead before bringing your pet in. This allows our team to begin assessing your pet’s condition, prepare for your arrival, and help determine whether immediate care is needed.

To help streamline check-in and reduce wait times, we may ask you to complete client and patient forms online prior to arrival. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding, and please know that our team is working diligently to provide attentive, compassionate care to every pet entrusted to us.

If your pet has ingested a toxic item, we recommend first calling the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply). At the Poison Control Center, expert toxicologists are available to make recommendations for treatment and give you advice on further emergency care.
